40 YEARS ON and 40 MEMORIES of the NHNTC
Presented by Jonathan Hughes

Jonathan Hughes has been a committee member of the NHNTC for half the life of the Centre. In that time he has witnessed many vicissitudes in the fortunes of the organisation, where he has served variously as Vice-chair, Membership Secretary, Webmaster, Newsletter editor and, currently, as temporary stand-in for the Treasurer. His present ‘real’ post is as Hon. Sec., responsible for the keeping the paperwork of the Centre up to date – a job which requires, inter alia, the issuance of a dozen agendas, and their subsequent minutes, each year.
Since it has just celebrated its 40th year, Jonathan, who was a history teacher, thought that members might like to have some glimpses of the Centre’s story and, perhaps, pause a moment to ponder its future. He has therefore shuffled through the archives - incomplete, alas – to select 40 moments of the last 40 years to reveal their *high and *low points.
Throughout, he will endeavour to acknowledge the pioneering spirit of the founders, the dogged determination of their successors, the often-unsung efforts of those working in the background, the valued contribution of the staff at The Vyne and the gratifying support of the membership over the years.
*Highest point: Visit to South Africa
*Lowest point: The pandemic, but the Centre KBO (in the words of WSC) with Zoom.
