Building of the Docklands Light Railway
Presented by Paul Ebbutt

Synopsis
Paul Ebbutt will give an overview of the planning, construction and operation of the original DLR in the 1980s. This will be based on his personal experience whilst working in the original LT Project team and supporting the original DLR Operations team. He writes that it was a ‘roller-coaster ride with drama, politics, joy and frustration’.
Profile
Paul is passionate about Rail infrastructure and transit systems. He continues to work part time for the PWI (Professional body for Rail Infrastructure Engineers), helping with training and Professional Development. He started his career with LT designing bridges and tunnel works which included extensions of the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow.

It was in the 1980s that he worked on the construction of the Docklands Light Railway in East London and then on planning for the Crossrail route (Elizabeth Line) across London. After a further 20 years on the Underground networks as one of the LU senior Civil Engineers, he finished his career as the LU Principal Engineer on the design & construction of the extension of the tube to Battersea Power Station in South London. Members will recall that Paul has spoken to us before, on the first hundred years of the London Underground, so we look forward to hearing of his experiences of an ‘overground’ railway. He enjoys supporting activities in his local community, where he is a committee member of the Alton Society. We are especially pleased to once more n welcome Paul who, with his wife, is an active member of the National Trust.
