Jane Austen's Seaside Follies

Synopsis

This talk with readings will focus on the historical and literary significance of Jane’s final and uncompleted novel, whose humorous treatment of the cult of seaside health during the Regency period will be illustrated

through semi-dramatised enactment of some of the author’s sparkling dialogues.

Profile

Michael Biddiss is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Reading, and a voluntary steward at Jane Austen’s House Museum in Chawton. Louise Biddiss was the first Head of Drama at Alton College, and is now a longstanding NT volunteer at Hinton Ampner. Both are members of the Alton Fringe Theatre company, which from time to time has included various forms of Austen presentation within its repertoire.
